How to unlock a card micro SD protected. For a few days, the microSD that you use paired with your mobile phone seems to have stopped working properly. To be precise, every time you try to use it, you see strange messages appear on the screen indicating that the card is write-protected.

In this guide I will teach you How to unlock a microSD card write protected and you will see that in the end you will have perfectly clear ideas on how to proceed.

How to unlock a write-protected micro SD card

Lock / unlock switch

In most cases, unlocking a write-protected microSD card is sufficient to remove the 'physical' locking mechanism on the memory card.

Let me explain: many memory cards (or whatever adapter you can insert them into) have a small switch on the left side (label side and contacts facing up), usually marked with writing blocking, which if you are married at the correct address, allows you to enable card write protection.

Taking into account the fact that the switch in question is placed to the side, it very often happens that the block stops write data is accidentally enabled. To solve, therefore, it is enough to simply flip the switch in the opposite direction.

Registry (Windows)

If the memory card does not have a switch or if, despite having been unlocked through the latter, you still cannot use it correctly, you can try to intervene using the Register Windows, which will disable write protection from there.

So, first of all, connect the microSD card to the PC, inserting it into the appropriate reader and recover the record. To do this, press the key combination Win + R at keyboard from the PC, to open E execute.

And in the window that you see appear on the desktop, type the command regedit. Then click on the button to accept (or press the Enter button on the keyboard) and access the record.

In the new window displayed on the screen, use the folders located in the left sidebar to go to the route HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> SYSTEM> CurrentControlSet> Control> StorageDevicePolicies,

Double click the key WriteProtect (right) write 0 in the field Value data and click on the button to accept.

If you can't find the folder StorageDevicePolicies, you can create it by right clicking on the folder control and selecting, from the menu that opens, the elements New> Password. To create the key WriteProtect, then right click on the folder StorageDevicePolicies and select the options from the menu that appears New> DWORD value (32 bits).

Now, restart your PC and try again to write data to your microSD card. If everything went well, you should finally do it.

Diskpart (Windows)

If neither of the two solutions I have already provided you have proven to be effective in unlocking a write protected microSD card, you can try relying on the tool diskpart, a partition utility built into Windows and working from the command line.

To use it, insert the microSD card into the PC reader, click Start button (the one who has Windows flag ) located at the far left of the taskbar and open the Symbol of the system with administrative privileges, writing cmd in the search field, right-clicking on the corresponding result and selecting the item Run as administrator from the menu that opens. Then click the button yes.

Now that you see the command prompt window on the desktop, issue the following commands by pressing the key Intro on the PC keyboard.

  • diskpart - to start the Diskpart utility.
  • disk list - to list the units available on the PC and locate the microSD card in which all the permissions will be restored.
  • select disk x - to select the microSD related drive you want to act on (instead of "X", you must write the number associated with the microSD).
  • attributes disk clear readonly - to erase the read-only attributes of the memory card.
  • output - to exit Diskpart.

At this point, your microSD card should finally be unlocked, and therefore should be freely used for reading and writing.

How to unlock a PC protected micro SD card

When trying to disable the locking mechanism physically present on the memory card, nothing happens? Is the microSD still stuck on writing?

In this case, the only way you can go, to be able to use it again without problems, is format card. The operation is feasible both in Windows  like in MacOS.

However, I warn you that unless you have created a Backup As a preventive measure, you will inevitably face data loss on the drive.

File Explorer (Windows)

To format your microSD card from Windows, to disable blocking, you can take advantage File Browser.

Open the latter by clicking on the icon of a yellow folder present in the taskbar, connect the microSD card to the card reader of your PC, and, meanwhile, in the window that has appeared on the desktop, select the item This PC o This team  from the left sidebar.

Then right click on the microSD card icon to format and, from the menu that appears, select the item format.

In the additional window that opens, select FAT32 o exFAT In the drop down menu to choose the file system, type the name you want to assign to the device in the field Volume label and click on the buttons starts y to accept to start the procedure.

HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool (Windows)

As an alternative to the "standard" Windows function, you can format your microSD card using HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool.

It is free software for OS from Microsoft only, in fact, it allows you to intervene on memory cards, USB sticks y hard drives by performing a low-level format of the drive (that is, you will erase all memory in a final and total way).

Note that it is possibly available in a paid version (it costs $ 3.30 for personal use) through which it is possible to get around the writing speed limits.

To download it, connect to their website and click on the link Download Windows Executable (works without installation): HDD Low Level Format Tool ver.xx present at the bottom of the page.

When the download is complete, open the .exe file obtained and, in the window that appears on the desktop, click on the button yes, I agree and finally in Continue for free.

So select the microSD card to format in the list in the middle and click the button continue. Finally go to the form Low level format and click on the button Format this device to start formatting the disk.

Disk Utility (macOS)

If, on the other hand, you are using MacOS, you can perform a low-level format of the memory card, similar to the one seen in the previous step for the Windows side, using Disk utility, the application is already included in all Mac for partition management.

To use it, start by clicking the icon (the one who has HDD ) present in the folder more from the launchpad.

In the window that you now see on the screen, select the name write-protected microSD card from the left sidebar and click the restore / format button placed at the top.

In the additional window that opens, click the button Security options, set the Disk Utility adjustment bar to the third or fourth position (to perform three or four rewrites of the data on the card) and press the button to accept.

To conclude, choose the name to be assigned to the memory card and the file system using the menus respectively name y format and start the formatting process by clicking the button restore.

How to unlock a write-protected micro SD card from mobile phones and tablets

If you have a mobile phone or tablet Android, you can unlock a write-protected microSD card by formatting it directly from the menu of the operating system. use IOS / iPadOS.

Instead, the operation is not feasible as these systems do not yet have a dedicated function for formatting external drives.

With that said, to format the Android microSD card, you must first insert the latter into the appropriate slot on the device (usually located on the side or on top).

Then you must take the device, unlock it, access the drawer (the screen where there are icons of all the applications) and touch the icon of the adjustments (the one who has gear ).

On the screen you see at this point, select the item Memory and file, name from your microSD card and touch the item first format and on the button Delete and format. Then, you will see an on-screen notice informing you of the completion of the procedure.

If this is the first time you have inserted the microSD card into your mobile phone or tablet, you can format it and choose whether to set it as a primary or secondary memory unit, simply by touching the corresponding notification that appears on the screen.

On the screen that will then be shown, you can continue selecting the item Use as portable memory (to configure the card as secondary memory) or the option Use as internal storage (to configure the card as main memory), by touching the button siguiente and finally on the buttons clean up y forma tear.
