You have no knowledge of music, but would you like to try composing some Songs using applications specifically designed to be used by "hobbyists in need"? I can help you!

With today's tutorial I will show you the ones that IMHO are the best apps to make music currently available. There are so much for Android as for iOS / iPadOS and can be used by both beginners and industry experts. Also, in most cases, they are free!

Free music apps

You are surely looking apps to make music but you don't know which one to turn to. Try these that I am going to tell you and, also, they are for free. As I said at the beginning of the article, they are available for android and guidance on IOS / iPadOS.

BandLab (Android / IOS / iPadOS)

The first music making app I recommend you try is BandLab. It is one of the best solutions to make music on your mobile. Thanks to which it is possible Record many different tracks, with a hundred virtual instruments and a large library of rhythms and loops for composing songs. It also allows you to record the sound of instruments and your own voice using the phone's microphone and also allows you to collaborate with other users in the community. It is completely free.

To download the application to your device, if you are using it android, visit the corresponding section of Play Store and press the button install. If you are using IOS / iPadOS, instead, visit the corresponding section of the App Store, press the button get e install and authorize the download through Face ID, touch ID o Apple ID Password. Then start the application by touching the button open appeared on the screen or by selecting the relevant icon which has just been added to the home screen.

Now that you see the main screen of the application, create your account to take advantage of the service and choose if you want to register through email or through the profile google, Facebook or Traves de cellphone number. Then indicate the name you want to use for your account and select a photo for your profile, then specify the reasons that lead you to use the application and your musical genres favorites.

How Bandlab is used

Once the account creation procedure is complete, tap the button capacitor positive (+) lead placed at the bottom, choose which instrument to start playing or whether you will start your musical composition using MIDI, the microphone of the mobile phone or tablet and wait a few moments for the editor of the application to be visible.

At this point, if you have chosen to play an instrument, use the controls available on the screen to start playing, if you have decided to use the loops, select the loops you want to add from the rich library of the application and touch the boxes on the screen to play your own tune, while if you choose to appeal to MIDI download, the ones you plan to use before you can start playing different instruments.

If you need to activate the metronome, I would like to point out that you can do it simply by pressing the corresponding button at the bottom right, while adjusting the settings related to the tempo, the key used, etc., just tap the button with the button gear wheel Located at the top of the screen and act on the menus and options available.

In all cases and if you have chosen to record sounds with the device's microphone, to start recording press the button Red circle placed at the bottom of the screen. However, to stop recording, touch the button with gray square.

Once registration is complete, save your creation by tapping the button with the cloud and the arrow present at the top right of the screen and choosing whether you want to archive the song just for you by tapping the redaction Save, or whether to allow other users who use the service to listen to it, selecting the option publish.

Then you can access all the musical compositions you have created, both private and public, by going to the main screen of the application and selecting the icon with the folder and the musical note present at the bottom right of the screen.

Walk Band - Music Studio (Android)

If you have a device android, I also suggest you evaluate the use of Walk Band - Music Studio. It is a free application that allows you to play various musical instruments (keyboard, guitar, bass, etc.) going directly from the screen of your mobile phone or tablet, all with ease. Note that it offers in-app purchases (at a base cost of 75 cents) to unlock additional features.

To download the application on your device, visit the corresponding section of the Play Store and press the button install. Then start the application by touching the button open that appeared on the screen or by selecting the relative icon added on the home screen.

How to use Walk Band

Now that you see the main Walk Band - Studio Musicale screen, choose the musical instrument you want to use from those available in the list and also start playing it, using the specific controls available on the screen, which vary depending on the instrument chosen.

At the top of the screen you will find the button with three horizontal lines, through which you can access the configuration menu and the button with the metronome, to allow its use.

To start recording the musical composition, touch the button of a Red point in the upper left corner, choose one of the recording modes available in MIDI (to record audio and video) or MIC (to record audio only) and continue.

When you are finished playing, to stop recording, press the button with white square that appeared in the upper left and continue saving the created song, typing the name you want to assign in the appropriate field and tap OK.

Then you can access the saved recordings from the main screen of the application, pressing the button with three horizontal lines top left and selecting the item Recordings list from the menu that appears.

GarageBand (iOS / iPadOS)

If you use a device based on IOS / iPadOSYou can also consider contacting GarageBand. In case you have never heard of it, I inform you that it is an application developed directly by Apple and specific for iPhone and iPad, through which it is possible to create and edit music tracks by playing real instruments (digitally played) through the device screen, as well as taking advantage of the many loops available. It is completely free and used by both industry experts and beginners.

In order to download it to your device, visit the corresponding section of the App Store, press the button get e install and authorize the download through Face ID, touch ID o Apple ID Password. Then start the application by touching the button open that appeared on the screen or by selecting the icon which has been added to the home screen.

How to use GarageBand

Once the GarageBand main screen is displayed, press the button capacitor positive (+) lead Located at the top, select the tab to choose the musical instrument you want to use to create your musical composition. If, on the other hand, you prefer to use loops, select the tab Live loops and touch the button new, to start a new project or select one of the predefined loops.

If you had previously chosen to play an instrument, also start creating your composition, using the appropriate touch controls available on the screen. However, if you decided to use loops, once the app editor is displayed, tap the button with the pen and the squares located at the bottom left, select one of the cells shown and choose the option loop, then select the available tracks in the proposed list to start the playback and drag the one that interests you to the selected cell (the procedure must be repeated for each loop you want to add).

If you need to enable the metronome, change the rhythm and adjust other settings related to music production, you can use the appropriate buttons located at the top of the screen, to start and stop recording your composition, just touch button with the Red circle.

Once registered, save the created music composition by touching the button with Arrow down located in the upper left, choosing My songs from the menu that appears, pressing and holding for a few moments in the project preview and selecting Share. Then decide whether to export the song as a stereo audio file by selecting the option padel, or if you want to save it as an editable file through GarageBand, choosing the option project.

Other apps to make music

None of the applications to make music that I have already proposed have convinced you in a particular way and, therefore, you are looking for solutions alternatives. In this case, I recommend that you download the following.

  • Caustic (Android / iOS / iPadOS): application that allows you to create rhythms, backing tracks and complete songs thanks to the numerous synthesizers available and the many possible options and customizations. It's free on Android, but to unlock full access to all the app's features, you must buy the corresponding key (at a cost of 6,99 euros), while on iOS / iPadOS it costs 10,99 euros.

 

  • n-Track (Android / iOS / iPadOS): App with which you can record, mix and play tracks and audio and MIDI effects. It's free, but to take advantage of all the features offered, you must continue with in-app purchases (at a basic cost of 99 cent.).

 

  • FL Studio Mobile (Android / iOS / iPadOS) - Professional-style app that allows you to create multi-track music. It's pretty much the mobile counterpart to one of the most recognized PC software for music production (if you remember correctly, I told you so in my dedicated guide to how download FL Studio). It costs € 14.90 for Android and € 14.99 for iOS / iPadOS. In both cases, in-app purchases (priced from € 1.09) are also offered to unlock additional features.

 

  • Music Maker JAM (Android / iOS / iPadOS): excellent app for making techno music. Please note that it allows you to share the music produced with other users. It's free, but it offers in-app purchases (at a base cost of 3.99 euros) to unlock additional tools and content.

 

  • G-Stomper Studio (Android) - An excellent music production application that offers its users numerous instruments: a sampler, a virtual synthesizer (VA-Beast), a keyboard, 24 Drum Pads, a line mixer and a live pattern. Note that the synthesizer, based on the VA-Beast system, allows less experienced users to produce complex sounds in a fairly simple way. It costs 13,99 euros.

 

  • Auxy Pro (iOS / iPadOS): application available only for iPhone and iPad that tries to simplify the music composition process as much as possible. Offers a practical keyboard for write Loop melodies, bass lines and patterns battery complex that can be configured with automatic tools. It's free, but offers in-app purchases (at a base cost of 4.99 euros / month) to unlock access to all features.
