Over the years, portable PCs have enabled an increasing number of users and professionals to carry out their activities on the go. This is precisely the peculiar characteristic of laptops, however, thanks to the latest technologies and the advancement of miniaturization processes, the various manufacturers have managed to bring even simpler PC models to the market to carry compared to traditional laptops.
They are called Ultrabook notebooks with certain technical characteristics and that, above all, are very thin and weigh very little. Usually they are not very powerful and cannot replace a desktop in every respect, but for those who can accept compromises they may be the best solution. Precisely for this reason, they have quickly become the ideal PCs for all professionals who can or must work on the move, easily replacing a portable PC for basic activities.
There are several criteria to consider when choosing a PC in this category, but don't worry, you're on the right page! Below, I will explain all the main notions that you should know in this area, so that you can choose the best ultrabook for your specific needs If you don't know terms like CPU, GPU, and don't know who the top names in the industry are, make yourself comfortable, arm yourself with a little patience, and discover everything you need to know to tackle your next purchase.

Technically, the term Ultrabook is a registered trademark of Intel (well-known processor manufacturer) which indicates a category of particularly small and light notebook PCs with processors from the Santa Clara manufacturer.
In this sense, they are portable PCs with certain characteristics: long life, good performance and, as is often the case with tablets, a fast recovery from standby mode. They typically use a metal body that serves, in addition to reducing size, thickness, and weight, but also to passively dissipate heat produced by internal electronics.
Ultrabooks mainly adopt Intel Core processors of different price ranges, SSD storage drives (more compact than hard drives quieter), although recently AMD has also started offering Ryzen processors suitable for portable PCs of reduced size, thickness and weight, so you can easily find it in the market as well AMD Ultrabook.
How to choose an Ultrabook
Choose a Ultrabook It is very simple, although you do need to have some basic computer skills. It is clear that you have already established that your next notebook PC will have to be thin, light and easy to transport, in addition to having a good autonomy of operation. As I explained earlier, in fact, these are all the features present in Ultrabooks.
I also remind you that Ultrabooks are different from 2-in-1 and convertible. Aesthetically they are very similar to a traditional notebook PC, they have a clamshell opening and do not have parts that can be separated (for example, the module of the keyboard). If you are looking for a different type of device, I recommend that you take a look at my guide to buying the best laptops, which deals with the subject in a more general way.
When choosing the best ultrabookyou can't ignore the monitor, which is a key feature. Typically, this product category is offered in compact size formats, so you can find models from around the world. 11 inches o 13 inches up to a maximum of 15,6 inches. This feature indicates the size of the installed monitor, or rather diagonal of the panel.
A separate and more detailed discussion is worth it resolution, that is, the number of pixels on the long and short sides of the screen (an example is the resolution × 1920 1080, Full HD, characterized by 1920 pixels on the long side and 1080 on the short side). However, by multiplying the figures, you get the total number of pixels on the screen, but this is a fact that the various manufacturers hardly mention in the list of technical specifications of the product.
- HD resolution - Being the Ultrabook notebook PCs of mid-range or mid-high range, it is difficult to find models with HD resolution screens. In this case you would have resolutions of × 1280 800 o × 1366 768 pixels, but overall I don't recommend Ultrabooks with similar specs.
- Full HD Resolution - this is the most common resolution on both Ultrabooks and traditional notebook PCs, and is widely used on desktop PCs as well. The pixels are × 1920 1080, with an optimal image definition taking into account the typical diagonals of Ultrabooks.
- Quad HD resolution - also called 2K, this resolution has a pixel count of 2560 × 1440 pixels. The definition is higher than Full HD with the same diagonal, however, this is not always a good thing. Especially on models with smaller screens, the interface elements can be very small and force the user to change the settings of the operating system, for a better user experience.
- Ultra HD resolution - This resolution is the highest that can be found in current generation Ultrabooks. Also in this case, the consideration made previously, on the elements of the interface that can appear with dimensions too small to be clearly distinguishable, is valid. Also known as 4K, it indicates a resolution of × 3840 2160 pixels.
Ultrabooks may also feature a touch screen monitor, which gives the possibility of issuing commands even with the use of a finger or a capacitive tip. However, there are few models that offer the latter possibility, which is easier to find in 2-in-1 and convertible.
CPU and GPU
la CPU (o processor ) is a fundamental component of any computer system and could be considered as the brain of the PC. It performs generic calculations and its ability to do so is due to several factors, such as the calculation frequency and the number of cores. Performance also affects the architecture used, and typically a more modern architecture not only enables faster processing, but allows you to perform various operations by consuming less power and impacting the life of the device less. battery.
Many Ultrabooks use CPU Intel Core, which are divided into several families: processors intel core m They consume very little but do not have great benefits and are found in extremely compact products. Then we have the Intel Core i3, i5 y i7, which are used respectively in low, medium and high-end systems, and individual products are recognized with four digits: the first indicates the generation (7, 8, for example, indicates the seventh and eighth generation), the others generally the performance band. Digits can be followed by a literal suffix: in Ultrabooks, the suffix is usually T, which indicates Intel's lowest-power-consuming processors.
You can also find it in the market Ultrabook with AMD CPU, as I said before. In this case, the processors will be in the series. AMD Ryzen, which represents the mid-high and high range of the competing manufacturer of Intel, and an excellent alternative both in terms of performance and in terms of power consumption.
Then we have the But by the full GPU acceleration tech (o graphics card ), which in Ultrabooks is generally integrated into the same CPU package to preserve power consumption as much as possible. It is a non-generic processor, like the CPU, but dedicated only to graphic calculations. When it is integrated into the processor, it shares RAM with the CPU, while when it is dedicated, it generally also has a memory allocated only to process the graphic activities required by the software.
Even it the memory It is a fundamental part of any computer system. the RAM is the system memory, which works in synergy with the CPU and the other fundamental components and stores its data temporarily until the Pc shuts down. This type of memory keeps the application data open and of course the larger the amount of RAM, the more data it can save in memory without slowing down the system. Ultrabooks typically start with 4GB of RAM for the cheaper models, but if you want a minimum of multitasking performance, I recommend that you consider only models 8GB and up.
Then we have the storage memory o storage to say it in English. It contains all the permanent data of the PC, therefore, the operating system, applications, files, documents: everything that ends up on the storage unit does not It is eliminated on reboot. There is hardly a classic HDD mechanic (HDD) on an Ultrabook, but there is more likely to be a SSDThat is, a much faster, solid state drive with no moving parts.
The latter guarantees much higher performance and total silence, and can be present in the 2.5 ″ size or in the smallest M.2 format. Storage memory is often replaceable, and in the case of M.2 models they could use interfaces PCIe o SATA III, of which the first is much faster. The cheaper models could also use eMMC flash drives, slower than SSDs but faster than hard drives.
Even it battery is of course a key feature in a Ultrabook, and is the component that allows you to use the device on the go, when electricity is not available. The manufacturers of ultrabooks indicate the specifications of the integrated battery with different measurement units, and among the most used we have milliamps hour (mAh). Sometimes you can find the number of cells in the battery or units of measure like Wh ( Watt / hour ) or V ( volt ) (to get the mAh, simply divide the Wh by V and multiply the result by 1000).
In any case, the higher the number, the greater the autonomy you can expect from that product, but it's not that simple! The actual battery life, in fact, is also decided by the power consumption of each individual component present in the Ultrabook.
In an Ultrabook the speech of the doors It is very delicate since the dimensions are narrow and there is not much room for any connector, especially if they are of considerable size. On newer, more subtle models, there's no room for doors, either USB type A (traditional sizes), but we only have doors USB Type C for reversible connectors.
In addition, USB ports they are not all the same: the Second generation USB 3.1 can transfer data of up to 1250 MB / s, while those of first generation (which are often called USB 3.0) peak at 625 MB / s. Then there are the USB 2.0 which stop up to 60MB / s.
In an Ultrabook, however, it is very difficult to find the door. Ethernet or external monitor ports. USB Type-C with functionality is often used Lightning 3 to connect external monitors, but you can also find an HDMI or a DisplayPort in the mini or micro variants. Due to deficiencies in terms of physical connectivity, Ultrabooks often use wireless solutions: always check the support of Standard Wi-Fi (preferably dual band 2.4 / 5GHz AC, or Wi-Fi 5) e Bluetooth (from version 4.0 onwards).
Very important in an Ultrabook is the design, both external and internal. Generally, the material used for the housing is metallic, and among the most exploited solutions we have aluminium alloy, magnesium alloy o carbon fiber For the most extreme models. The material often sets the value of thickness as well, since with a stronger material you can dare more in this particular area. However, the use of refined metal alloys can dramatically affect the production cost of the system.
la keyboard It is another important component of the PC: if you can do it, check yourself the compliance while typing the keys or the comfort in writing long texts. In an Ultrabook I recommend you then island keyboards, that is, with the individual keys that are separated from the Pc chassis, and also consider choosing a model with backlit keys, to write comfortably even in low light environments.
Like a traditional notebook PC, Ultrabooks can also mount one webcam and you can integrate a card reader to read / write SD or microSD memory cards. It is very rare (if not impossible) that an Ultrabook also contains a optical disc drives, such as DVD or Blu-Ray (which, however, can be purchased separately).
To operate an Ultrabook you need a operating system, which is basic software that interacts with the individual components present in the system. To do this, the operating system uses drivers and other code developed to operate at a low level with installed hardware. These processes are invisible to the user, who only sees a simplified graphical interface with several applications that allow him to carry out operations through his PC. There are several OS on the market, often with their own applications and compatibility, but the files are often "universal" and can be viewed or edited by all PCs (eg JPG for photos or MP4 for video).
- windows - it is the most popular operating system in Ultrabooks and the latest version available in the market is Windows 10. It has a large number of applications and games and has a personalized store from which to download the most advanced ones.
- MacOS - an operating system much appreciated in Ultrabooks, available only and exclusively in the Apple MacBook family. Developed internally by Apple and officially operating only on Colossus of Cupertino products, it is characterized by its great ease of use and synergy with Apple products (iPhone, iPad).
- Chrome OS - not very widespread in Italy, but some very cheap Ultrabooks use the operating system Chrome OS. It is developed by Google and it is based on the use of cloud services (but not only). It is characterized by its lightness, but in terms of applications it is inferior to the other operating systems available on the market.
- Linux - some models of compact notebook PCs can integrate an operating system distribution Linux. Among the most famous, for example, I mention Ubuntu, a distribution managed by Canonical and that you will find in one of the products that I will suggest later.
What Ultrabook to buy
Precisely for the miniaturization work behind a portable PC of this type, on average a Ultrabook It has a fairly high retail price. Here is a selection of products from which you can choose which Ultrabook to buyAlthough technically some of these products are simple compact size notebooks. The cheaper ones will force you to take on a few compromises and the up-mid-range models are preferable, but don't despair! Even if you have budget limits, there are products that can satisfy you if you don't have professional needs.
