How does a drill work?

It can be said that the drill is a tool that emerged in the nineteenth century, but that the concept of the rotary movement of the same to get to drill the materials comes from 2.700 BC, that is why it is necessary to talk about the functions that has had the same from its origin to the present.

What is a drill?

The drill is a device that is used to make holes or holes in certain materials, to achieve this, the drill bit must be supported on the surface to be drilled, and then the drill is turned on so that the drill begins to turn, to be able to carry out the hole in the material to be drilled, however, care must be taken not to damage the material that we are treating with the drill. This process helps do-it-yourself jobs to be done easily thanks to all the components that this device has to achieve its function.

Basic functions of a drill

As we have already mentioned previously, the main function of the drill is to make holes in a material with an indeterminate purpose. But apart from this one, they also have other functions that we will detail below:

  • Perforated : this is its fundamental function. Make the hole using a drill, which is rotating and comes into contact with another material to drill.
  • Firing pin: This is when the hole is made by blows of great force. And it is recommended, when the material that we want to open a hole is of great hardness.
  • Sand: As we have already said before, the drill is a device that rotates another piece to perform different types of DIY work, that is why, in the case of drilling, a bit must be placed on the drill. But if what you want is to sand. The rotary movement that it has makes the sanding process simple and can be used on metals, wood among others through the use of an emery.
  • Screw or unscrew: For the drill to screw or unscrew a part, a rotary movement is required with a special part of the drill, which simulates the functions of a screwdriver. This is why, if we place the head in the shape of a screwdriver on the tip of the drill, the aforementioned process can be carried out, in a very short period of time, but to be effective and no damage to materials occurs, the drill should be on the lowest power it has.
  • Sharpen: In this case, if the drill is placed in the head with a circular stone to sharpen, the rotating movement of this tool makes said stone rotate at a high speed, which makes it easier to sharpen a material made from a metal or glass, however, with the latter, great care must be taken not to break it.

Special functions of a Drill

It is important to comment that there are different types of drills that adapt to the type of material with which it will be worked, that is why the operation of each of these drills will differ between power, precision, among other aspects, and these they use technology advanced to ensure that your DIY work can be completed without a hitch.

The drill has a power source that feeds its motor, in the vast majority of cases this source is electrical, but in the same way it can be pneumatic, hydraulic, among others.

This energy reaches the condenser of the drill, and when the trigger that it has is activated, the energy received by the condenser is transported to the motor.

When this energy reaches the motor, it in turn drives its rotating system, which turns the bit. The drill must always be manipulated from the handle and said piece must be held tightly, and then put the drill bit in contact on the surface we want to drill. Taking into account the above, the special functions of these are the following:

  • How a bench drill works: These are the types of drills that are fixed in one place, and that have a higher power than the others. These drills are used in workshops, since they are fixed in one place, and the only thing that will have movement is the material to be drilled.
  • How an electric drill works: These work by means of the electrical energy that makes them rotate, it has many applications. Among the most prominent are drills that use a battery, since it is not connected to a direct electrical power source, such as a power outlet.
  • How a rotary hammer drill works: This device is used not only to generate holes in a surface, but also to destroy materials, and this process can be carried out thanks to an impact system that works with compressed air, which carries out several consecutive blows, whose frequency depends of the speed at which the drill is turning, it makes it easier to pierce hard objects, such as materials made of various metals, and that also has a handle that provides greater support and precision while you are working, to avoid accidents.
  • How a magnetic drill works: It is a motorized device, whose use is focused on drilling surfaces of very resistant materials, such as objects made of steel or similar materials. On the other hand, this type of drill is considered the most versatile and comfortable to use, since it can be transported comfortably and does not use cables.

Type

The types of drills that are present on the market can be classified by their energy source:

  • Hand drills : they are the drills that were used in ancient times and that the rotation that the aforementioned makes, has to be done by the person who is using it. They are not very efficient and are not ergonomic, but due to their low power, they can be used to make holes in soft surfaces.
  • Electric drills : these are the most used today. Since they are very comfortable to use, because they do not need to be connected to the electrical current and they have an ergonomic support, which facilitates their handling.
  • Pneumatic or hydraulic drills : these are the types of drill that take advantage of the force of air, such as that of water, to be able to successfully drill holes in a surface. Normally, this type of drill is used at an industrial level because they have specialized facilities to use these drills, which must be used under extreme caution.

Finally, we can say that drills are one of the most used tools in the world, and that in most houses we can find one of them. We also learned that drills have different functions, but one of them is to drill surfaces, but with them you can work in other ways, since they adjust to the needs you have.

There are different types of drills that can help us drill certain types of materials. That is why it is important to know them to be able to choose the right drill depending on the use you are going to give it.
