How to access the router step by step

Connect the router

To begin, I suggest you verify that the router is properly connected to the phone jack and the PC. He telephone cable must be inserted into the wall socket and into the appropriate input on the router and the appropriate light on the device icon must be illuminated: the supply (usually it is colored green o yellow ). Furthermore, the ethernet cable must be inserted into one of the numbered doors device and at the door LAN of the PC.

What you bought is a wireless router? Simply verify that the PC is connected to the Wi-Fi network generated by it. Make sure the icon WiFi connection is present next to the clock in the dedicated area of the PC system bar or Mac and ready.

Access the configuration panel

After connecting the two devices, open the browser (eg. chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer ) and try to connect to the IP adress the router indicated in the user manual of the router by writing it in the bar at the top and then pressing the button Enter at keyboard. The most widely used for almost all brands of routers are the following.

  • 192.168.0.1
  • 192.168.1.1
  • 192.168.1.254

If the page cannot be accessed from the above three addresses, you can try to find the IP to access the router by looking at the back of the device, you should find a tag attached with the address written on it.

If, on the other hand, the IP address is not indicated in the user manual or on any attached label to the device and if the "coordinates" I just entered are not valid, you can find the information you need by acting on the network connection settings.

  • Find the "coordinates" in Windows

If you are using a Windows PC, you can find the IP address of your router in two different ways: the first is to enter the connection properties and view the details of the last one, the second to give a simple command from the Prompt.

To access the connection properties, click the start button (the flag icon located in the lower left corner of the screen), search for the Panel control in the menu that opens and select the Control panel from the search results, to open the classic Windows Control Panel.

Then go to Network and internet > Center network and sharing, select the name of the connection in use (eg. Ethernet o Wi-Fi ), Click the button details and you will find the IP address of the router below the entry Default Gateway IPv4.

If you prefer to use the Symbol of the system - you can call by pressing Win + R on the PC keyboard and typing the cmd in the panel Run ... - give the order ipconfig, press Enter and you will find the address of the router next to the entrance Default Gateway

  • Find the "coordinates" on Mac

Also on Mac there are two different ways to find out the coordinates that allow you to access the router. The first is to open the terminal (look it up in the folder more from the launchpad) and give the command netstat -nr | grep by default.

The second one is a bit longer but also more intuitive for those who are not familiar with the command line: you must go to the section RED may be made by each System preferences, select the name of the connection in use (eg. Wi-Fi ) from the left sidebar, press the button advanced and select the card TCP / IP : The IP address of the router is the one next to the entry Router.

  • Find username and password

After finding the correct IP address, you can finally connect to the configuration panel of your router. Once entered in the address bar of the browser, a screen should open to insert Username and password to enter the router.

The default login details are usually admin / admin o admin / passwordYou should find them listed in the router manual or on the label attached to the back of the device.

In case none of these combinations work well, please try to find your router password on the website Password router. To use it, connected to your home page, select a router brand from the dropdown menu Select the router manufacturer and click on the button Find password.

On the page that opens, find your router model or modem / router you own and find out what the username and password combination is required to access your admin panel.

Adjust settings

After being able to access the router, it proceeds to intervene in the parameters in which it believes that it is more appropriate to act. Unfortunately, I can't be too specific in my directions, as I don't know the exact model of your router.

To change the password necessary to access the device settings, it is generally sufficient to go to the section administration o fullfilment of security requirements ; in the card firewall o Virtual server instead, you must go to the open ports for eMule, uTorrent, and other P2P and non-P2P programs; while in the section without cables you generally need to login to configure wireless connections in case you were using a wireless router.

After making all the necessary changes, don't forget to click on the button Save o Save Changes to save the new configuration to the router's control panel. Note that after confirming the application of the changes made in some cases, the router may automatically restart

In case of problems

If you need more information on how to access the router or if, in any case, even if you have followed my instructions sensibly, there is a problem, you can connect to the corresponding section support and assistance from the official website of the manufacturer of your device where all the manuals of all the commercialized devices are present and where it is clearly indicated how to access the router and make other changes to the device configuration.

The following is a list of all major router and modem / router manufacturers and their link to the website for assistance and assistance.

If, on the other hand, you have problems because you have changed the combination of username and password necessary to access the router but you do not remember what data you have chosen, I am sorry, I tell you this, but the only solution you have left is to carry out device reset.

Continuing in this way also restores the default username and password combination so that you can access the device's admin panel using the default. Note, however, that in addition to the username and password, you will also lose all current settings (which you will therefore need to re-enter upon a full reboot).

Not sure how to reset the router? No problem. Usually it is enough to take a pencil (or at least a thin and pointed object) and press the reset button for 10-15 seconds. The reset button is the little black on the back of the device.

When the router restarts, all its lights on the device start to flash, then go off after a few seconds, and the internet connection procedure starts again.
