How to format a iPhone. You recently updated your iPhone to the latest version of iOS available for your model, but the device is very slow. As a workaround, you can try resetting your iDevice.

With this tutorial, I want to show the exact procedure to be carried out to be able to format any iPhone model in a simple way and, above all, without having any data loss. To do this, you do not need to be a connoisseur of the Apple world or the technology in general, just have a modicum of patience.

How to format an iPhone step by step

What to do before formatting the iphone?

If you do not intend to lose all data on your iPhone, before starting the procedure to format the iPhone, you would do well to make a copy   of the data on the device.

When making a Backup, you will have the possibility to recover settings, applications and data even after the reset procedure, as well as in case you decide to buy a new iPhone and transfer all your data to it.

To back up your iPhone, you can act on several levels: one locally and one from remotely, on the cloud. For save your data locally you can use iTunes, while for online data backup you can rely on the special function of iCloud.

In addition to the backup, before initializing the iPhone it is necessary to deactivate the option of Find my iphone, the anti-theft feature of your iDevice, which when activated prevents iOS recovery. You will find everything indicated in a very detailed way below.

Backup via iTunes

If you prefer to make a local backup of your iPhone, you should turn to iTunes, Apple's popular multimedia software. iTunes is included "standard" in all Mac and must be downloaded and installed separately on Windows PCs.

If you are using a Windows equipped PC and you have not downloaded iTunes yet, you must connect to Apple's official website and download the program by clicking the button Download.

Open the installation package iTunesSetup.exe that has been downloaded to your PC and click  Next,   Install on pc, yes  for two consecutive times. To finish, press finalize.

Now, regardless of operating system, connect your iPhone to the computer using the appropriate Dock / Lightning cable and wait a few moments for iTunes to recognize it.

If this is the first time you connect the iPhone to the PC, you must authorize the connection between the two devices pressing the button first authorize on the phone screen and then the button Next  that appears on the desktop of the PC.

Then select the icon iPhone which appeared in the upper left of the iTunes window and clicked on the item Files / Files. At Devices and then Transfer purchases from "iPhone's [nome]" from the program menu to transfer all the content purchased on the iPhone to the PC.

When finished, select the item Your Order from the iTunes sidebar and enter a password to protect the backup. Once these steps have also been completed, click the button Copy now and wait patiently for your iPhone to be backed up to PC.

Backup via iCloud

As I told you, besides locally, through iTunes, you can also backup iPhone through iCloud.

To do this, go to the home screen of your iDevice, go to adjustments (the icon of gear ), Choose name, then iCloud y ICloud Backup. At this point, if it is not already green, activate the lever located next to the item Backup  iCloud and press the button Copy now to start backing up data to iCloud.

This may take a few minutes. To complete it, make sure your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network and connected to a power source. If you have a device equipped with an iOS version prior to 10.3, to adjust the backup preferences you must go to Settings> iCloud> Backup.

Turn off Find my iPhone

Now, as I already mentioned, you must disable the function Find my iphone active on iPhone.

To do this, press the section icon configurations iOS on your device, select Your Name, then  iCloud and touches Find my iphone in the menu that opens. So, put in OFF lever Find my iphone and then enter your Apple ID password.

If you are using an iOS version earlier than 10.3, you can set the same preferences by going to Settings> iCloud> Find my iPhone.

What to do to format the iPhone?

After backing up the data on your device, you can finally get down to the actual procedure by which to format iPhone. Even then, you can choose between two different options: via Pc using iTunes or acting directly from iOS.

The end result of the two procedures is practically the same, the only thing that changes is that when formatting the iPhone via PC, you will necessarily have to install the most recent version of iOS on the device, while acting directly from the iPhone you can keep the current one.

Reset iPhone from PC

If you want to format the iPhone from your PC, you must use, as I have already mentioned, iTunes. If you have not previously made a backup through iTunes or if after doing so you have disconnected the device from the PC and closed the program window, first connect the iPhone to the PC or Mac with the appropriate cable and wait for the Apple media player starts automatically.

Now, press the icon of iPhone present in the upper left of the window, click on the button Restore iphone located at the top right of iTunes and accept the iOS terms of use by pressing first on Reset / Restore and Update. At Next and finally in I agree.

After a few minutes (the duration of the process varies depending on the speed of your ADSL / fiber connection since the latest version of iOS is automatically downloaded from Internet) a message will appear advising you that the iPhone has been formatted and then returned to the factory state.

Once done, iTunes will ask if you want to set your phone as a new device or if you want to restore the apps and data from the previous backup. If you need sell your iPhone, take no further steps and let its new owner configure it himself.

If you want to configure the iPhone as if it were a new terminal, put the check mark next to the item Set up as a new iPhone and follow all the steps of the procedure proposed on the screen.

Restore iPhone from iOS

Do you prefer to restore the iPhone avoiding the use of the PC? You just need to access a special section attached to the device settings and select the option you prefer.

First, grab the mobile phone of the Apple brand, access its home screen and press the icon configurations. Select item General From the displayed screen, scroll to the bottom and touch Restore.

What to do in case of problems?

Have you followed all the above instructions in detail but cannot complete the procedure to initialize iPhone due to some error? Would you like to restore your iPhone backup to a device that was previously jailbroken? Then you can try to fix it by putting the device in modality DFU.

Don't you know what I'm talking about? No problem, let's fix it right away!

DFU mode, also known as "American" DFU mode, is a recovery mode that allows you to install iOS without going through some standard recovery mode restrictions. It is preferable to use it on jailbroken devices, as it can erase Cydia and jailbreak data that would otherwise be taking up space on the device memory.

To put your iPhone in DFU, connect the device to the PC and turn it off completely by holding down the key On for a few seconds and moving the lever to the right Slide to turn off which appears at the top of the screen.

At this point, hold down the Power and Power keys.  Home simultaneously for about ten seconds until the logo of the Apple on the device screen, then release the key On and keep pressing the Home until iTunes detects the iDevice in recovery mode.

After successfully putting your iPhone in DFU mode, press the button Okay you see on the screen of your Pc and restore the mobile phone of the Apple brand by clicking the button Restore iPhone ... from iTunes.
