It is normal: APK files, in fact, are the application installation packages for Android and, if you try to open them on a system other than the one designed by Google for mobile phones and tablets, you will not be able to view the content… unless you use solutions that I will tell you later.

Going into more details, I will tell about the official Google software, Android Studio, which allows you to design applications for Android and see its content in detail. If, on the other hand, your goal is to install a Android application on your PC, through its APK, you will find the emulator of Android pc, which I will point out in the second part of the guide.

Open APK files on PC with Android Studio

A file APK It is a file that contains the files necessary to install an application on Android. In this sense, you can use FOSS Android Studio, developed by Google, for application design.

Therefore, this program allows you to decompile an APK file and view its contents. If you are interested in Android Studio, I recommend that you go to the official website and click the button Download Android Studio, located in the center of the website.

On the next screen, place a check mark in the box below and press the button. Download Android Studio.

Doing so will download the file .exe for Windows or dmg for macOS. After downloading the file, if you use Windows double click on it and press Yes, in user account control.

On the screen shown, press the button siguiente three consecutive times and at the end of the installation press the button finished.

If you use MacOS, instead, double-click the file you downloaded, and on the screen that appears, drag Android Studio in the folder Applications.

After that, start Android Studio through its icon on the desk Windows or on the Launchpad by macOS. Then press the button to accept on the screen you see, click the button siguiente three consecutive times and wait for the download of all the necessary components for the program to work. When done click finished to display the Android Studio main screen.

Among the items displayed on the screen panel, select the one called Open an existing Android Studio project and, on the screen you are viewing, select the APK file of your interest, confirming with the button Open.

If you have followed the instructions that I have provided, you will have successfully opened the APK file, showing all the files within it, in the center panel of the Android Studio main screen.

Open APK files on PC via Android emulator

For run an Android application on your PC, you must use a Android emulator : as BlueStacks, a famous free Android emulation software downloadable on Windows and macOS, via its official website.

For, download BlueStacks on your Pc, go to the link I provided you a moment ago, press the button Download BlueStacks and on the next screen click the button Download.

After downloading the program installation file (in format .exe in Windows or in format dmg on macOS), double-click it and follow the procedure shown on the screen.

En Windows, press up on yes in the window of User Account Control and click on the button Install Now. Now, wait for the installation procedure to complete and press the button complete.

En MacOS, instead, double-click the icon BlueStacks on the screen that is displayed and then press the button open. Now, on the new screen you see, click continue and then installwrite the password de Mac and press the button Installation wizard. At the end of the installation procedure, press the button Open system preferences, click allow and then press the icon with the padlock down left. At this point, write the password Mac and press the button To unlock.

After starting BlueStacks, you will be asked to set up a Google account. Then press the button start  and log in with your Gmail account credentials, following the on-screen procedure. At this point, press the button Start using BlueStacks to start using the Android emulator.

Now that you have installed and configured BlueStacks, you can open an APK file with ease. On the main screen of the emulator, find the Installed applications, located in the upper left corner. Then click on the icon next to it, and in the box you see, select Install APK.

At this point, through the screen that appears, you just have to look for the APK file on the PC and select it, confirming the operation with the button open. Doing so will install the APK file and it will be possible to run the application it contains.

As an alternative to this procedure, after installing and configuring BlueStacksYou can simply double-click the APK file to open it, and therefore install it within the emulator.

Extract APK files on PC

An APK file can be opened on a PC with any data storage software or tool such as WinRAR o WinZip.

Try the free program. 7-Zip, available only in Windows. However, being open source software, its main development code ( p7zip ) is used to create other software, also free, such as Keka, guidance on MacOS.

7-Zip (Windows)

If you have a PC with Windows, among the many programs to compress and extract files, I recommend you use 7-Zip, available free of charge through the official website. It is an open source program that allows you to manage files with RAR, CAB, GZIP, 7Z, ZIP, and even APK extensions.

If you are interested in using 7-Zip, go to the link I provided and click on the item Download, corresponding to the version of the computer architecture.

Once this is done, once the file download is complete .exe, double click on it and press yesin the window of User Account Control Windows. At this point, on the screen that is displayed, click the button install and at the end of the procedure press the button to close.

To open an APK package and extract its content on the PC, right-click on the file and, in the context menu, select the items 7-Zip> Extract the files.

You will be shown a screen in which you must select the destination to which to extract the content of the APK file. Press the button to accept to start extracting the files, and in a few seconds, you're done.

Keka (macOS)

cake is a free software for macOS that allows you to manage compressed files, such as those in RAR, ZIP, 7Z and APK formats, with the possibility of extracting their contents on the PC to any destination selected by the user.

If you are interested in downloading it on your Mac, go to its official website and click the button Download vx.xx, which you find on the left. You can also download it directly from the Mac App Store, but in that case a payment of $ 1.99 is required (to support its development).

After taking the file dmg Keka, open it and drag the program into the folder applications macOS, to complete the installation. Its icon will be available on the Launchpad in case you want to access Keka's main screen, but this procedure is not necessary to open an APK file.

What you need to do is just go to the location where the APK file is present and double click on it. Doing so will show you a screen to select the destination where to extract the content of the APK file. Choose the folder on the Mac and press the button extract  located in the lower right.

If you have done the procedure correctly, you will find the contents of the APK file inside a folder in the destination you selected.

If Keka doesn't open automatically when you double-click the APK file, right-click the package to extract and select the rumors Open with> Keka from the macOS context menu.

In case of errors when running the software, go to the folder applications and start it by right-clicking on its icon and selecting the item open twice in a row. This operation is required only on first startup and serves to bypass macOS restrictions in applications from non-certified developers.
