What do you need to put wifi in the house?

Before going into the details of this guide and indicating how to put wifi in the houseIt may be helpful for you to know the equipment you need to be able to do this.

First, if you have not already done so, you must activate a Internet offer choosing the solution that best suits your needs. Among the various types of offers on the list of the main Italian telephone operators, the first feature to consider is the connection speed, choosing whether to activate an offer for fiber optics or for classic ADSL.

Also, to create a Wi-Fi network at home you need a router able to connect to the Internet through the telephone cable and distribute the connection to multiple devices (for example, Pc, mobile phone, Smart TV, etc.) wirelessly.

Finally, if you have a multi-story home and need Wi-Fi signal to be available in every room in your home, you may find one or more helpful. range extender, of devices capable of connecting to the router and expand its range of action.

How much does it cost to put wifi in the house?

If you wonder how much does it cost to put wifi in the houseYou will be happy to know that the initial cost is a few tens of euros. As mentioned above, all you need is a Wi-Fi modem router and activation of an Internet offer.

The monthly cost of an Internet offer fluctuates between 30 and 60 euros per month (excluding any activation costs), with a price that varies according to the included services (for example, unlimited phone calls). It will be helpful to know that some offers also include free loan router. Otherwise, you have two options: choose your trusted operator's router rental (if available) at an additional monthly cost, or buy a modem / router yourself.

In the latter case, the cost of a wireless router ranges from 20 to 200 euros depending on the functionality and characteristics of the device, such as data transfer speed, Wi-Fi classes and frequency bands supported by the router, as well as the components of the router, such as the chipset, RAM, CPU and antennas.

Activate an internet offer

As mentioned above, if you have not already done so, to put Wi-Fi in the house, you must activate an internet offer : These are some of the ones that I find most interesting, with and without a phone line.

Put wifi in the house with phone line

The main Italian telephone operators offer suitable solutions for all needs at prices ranging from 30 to 50 euros per month. To make your choice easier and to give you a 360 ° overview of available offerings, I list my detailed guides.

If you don't need to make phone calls and want to activate an offer «Only on the Internet», you can consider the offer Fastweb Internet only o TIM's Internet without limits offering unlimited calling.

Put Wi-Fi around the house without a phone line

If your intention is put wifi in the house without a phone line Since you have decided to do without the landline, you may want to consider one of the "Internet only" offerings that I mentioned in the previous paragraphs.

If, on the other hand, you live in an area that ADSL or traditional fiber networks have not yet reached, you should rely on a different type of connection. If so, you may want to consider EOLO They provide the use of the radio signal for broadcasting the data network, the speed of which can even reach 100 Mega in the download.

Among the solutions available to you there are also Cheapnet, an independent vendor offering offerings based on CMAX, WIMAX and HIPERLAN2 technologies. For more information and to explore the topic, you can read my guide on how to get Internet without a phone line.

Also, you can consider the technology at 4G Linkem, which allows you to browse according to consumption, without fixed monthly costs. More information here..

Where to put wifi in the house

After choosing and completing the activation of the Internet offer that best suits your needs and having purchased (or received) the modem router, you are ready to configure the modem router and activate the Wi-Fi network at home.

First, choose the room in which place the router, keeping in mind that there must be at least one power outlet and one telephone socket. Also, if you have a multi-story house with many rooms, I recommend that you choose a "strategic" room to optimize wireless signal coverage in the house.

To better understand, let's take a practical example. If you have a house on three floors and you need all rooms to be accessible via wireless signal, you will need to place the router in a central room on the first floor. To verify coverage (after completing the modem installation), you can connect to your home Wi-Fi network with your mobile phone and check the signal strength in each room.

By doing this, you can understand if you have placed the router in a good position and if there are areas of the house that the Wi-Fi signal does not reach. In the latter case, if you consider it appropriate, you can consider purchasing one or more devices capable of improving the Wi-Fi signal.

Among them, there are i range extender, devices that allow you to take the signal of a wireless network and extend it to areas that the latter does not normally reach. The cheapest ones cost between 20 and 50 euros.

Alternatively, you can trust mesh systems which are made up of multiple routers connected directly to the modem. Only one device acts as the main router, while the other has the task of extending the signal. Unlike range extenders, mesh systems do not have a hierarchical order between the different nodes and always exchange information at the same speed, creating a single Wi-Fi network and allowing connected devices to pass through (for example, mobile phones or Pcs) from one router to another without disconnecting from the network and always maintaining the same performance.
