Restore iPad from iOS
Let's start with the fastest procedure, the one that allows you restore iPad directly from iOS, without connecting the device to the PC.
As mentioned above, before you start working, you should back up the data to the tablet. To do this you can use iCloud, Apple's cloud service that allows you to store all data and applications on iOS devices online.
To start a full backup of your iPad, including related applications and data, connect the tablet to a power source, connect it to a wireless network (this will avoid excessive consumption of battery and data traffic if you have an iPad equipped with cellular support) and went to the menu adjustments from iOS. Then select the your name the voices iCloud> iCloud Backup, make sure the lever for the function ICloud backup is set to EN (otherwise activate it) and press the button Go back now, to start the backup in iCloud.
If you use an iOS version earlier than 10.3, to adjust the settings related to iPad backup, go to the menu Settings> iCloud> Backup and proceed as explained above.
Photos and videos on iPad are automatically saved to iCloud backup (more info here), however I suggest you use the ICloud photo library : It is an additional service that allows you to permanently store and then automatically synchronize on all devices, your photos and videos. It's free, but to use it you must subscribe to an iCloud payment plan. For more information, see my tutorial on archiving photos in iCloud.
With regards to music, my advice is to activate the service. ICloud music libraryperhaps combining it with a subscription ad Apple Music, to keep music synchronized on all your devices. You can activate Apple Music (€ 9,99 / month after the first three months of free trial) and iCloud Music Library from the iPad music app or from the menu Settings> Music from iOS.
If you don't want to spend money, you can save photos, videos and music the "old way", that is, by connecting the iPad to your PC and transferring the data to it. I explained how to do it in my tutorials on how to connect iPad to PC.
Once all backup operations are complete, you can take action, i.e. you can restore your tablet and restore it to factory state. To do this, go to adjustments iOS (the settings icon on the home screen), select the item general from the menu that opens and goes up first restore and then Initialize content and settings.
Then write the unlock code of your iPad, confirm your willingness to restore the device by pressing the button initialize and wait patiently for the tablet to return to the factory state.
At the end of the restoration, the iPad will restart and the initial iOS setup procedure will start; procedure during which you can decide whether to configure the tablet as a new iPad or restore your previous backup from iCloud.
Restore the iPad from your PC
Now let's see how to restore iPad of the Pc. So easy to understand, you need to perform this operation iTunes, Apple's multimedia software that is "standard" installed on all Mac (up to macOS 10.14 Mojave) and is available as a free download for Windows PC.
If you have a Windows PC and you haven't installed iTunes yet, connect to the Apple website and click the button Download on the left to download the software to your PC. Then open the file iTunes6464Setup.exe and complete the installation of iTunes by clicking the buttons in sequence siguiente, install, yes (for two consecutive times) e final. If you use Windows 10, you can too install iTunes from Microsoft Store.
At this point, connect the tablet to the PC with the supplied Lightning cable and wait for iTunes to start on its own. If this is the first time connecting the two devices, authorize the operation by pressing the corresponding button that appears on the iPad screen and on the Windows or MacOS desktop.
Then select the iPad icon that appears in the upper left corner of the main iTunes window, select the item summary from the program sidebar and start backing up your tablet. The procedure to follow is very simple. You must first select the item Transfer purchases from iPad of menu File> Devices, to save all the applications and multimedia content that you have purchased on your iPad on your PC; then you need to start saving the applications and settings on your PC by clicking the button Backup now found at the bottom right. If you also want to save health and home automation data, put the check mark next to the item Local Backup Encoding and set a password protection for the backup.
Once all backup operations are complete, you should disable your iPad's anti-theft feature, which when activated prevents iOS from being restored. Then go to adjustments dell'iPad By pressing the gear icon on the home screen, tap your name, select the items iCloud y Find my iPad from the menu that opens, upload OFF the lever relative to the option Find my iPad and enter your Apple ID password. If you are using an iOS version earlier than 10.3, you can adjust the preferences for "Find my iPad" in Settings> iCloud> Find my iPad.
Now make yourself a nice cup of tea and wait patiently for the reset procedure to complete. As mentioned at the beginning of the post, the latest version of iOS will be downloaded from Internet (the download is very complete so it will take a long time) and then the iPad will be restored.
After downloading e install iOS, iTunes will warn you that the device's default settings have been restored. Then wait for your iPad icon to reappear in the program menu, click on it and choose if you want to set the device as new iPad or if you restore data and applications from a previous backup.
macOS 10.15 Catalina and later
If you use Catalina 10.15 Catalina or later, as iTunes is no longer available for these OS, must act through discoverer, selecting your icon Protectors from the left sidebar and selecting the tab general from the screen that is proposed to you. The rest of the steps to follow are the same as those seen previously for Windows and earlier versions of MacOS, using iTunes.
Restore iPad after jailbreak
Do you have a jailbroken iPad? In this case, if you want to remove Cydia and all its settings, you need to restore the tablet using DFU mode.
DFU mode is a special mode that connects the PC and Apple devices without going through the latter's boot manager. This allows you to avoid any problems that may arise when restoring a jailbroken device and completely delete the Cydia data (which would otherwise remain "hidden" in the terminal memory).
To activate DFU mode on your iPad, connect the tablet to the PC and turn it off completely (by pressing and holding the button power, for a few seconds and moving the lever that appears on the screen to the right). Then hold the button power, for about 3 seconds, also press the button casa and hold down both keys for about 10 seconds. Finally, leave the button pressed power, press and hold the button casa, for about 8 seconds and wait for iTunes to detect a iPad in recovery mode.
If the procedure is successful, the iPad screen remains off. If you see the iTunes icon appear on the screen, it means that the tablet has entered recovery mode and not DFU mode, so the procedure should be repeated. To exit recovery mode (or DFU mode), press and hold the keys casa y power iPad for about 20 seconds, until the Apple logo appears on the device screen.
After activating DFU mode, click the button Restore iPad from iTunes and wait for the tablet to return to the factory state. Otherwise, the procedure to follow is the same as we saw previously for the standard restoration from iTunes.
