How to speed up your WiFi. When you connect to the wireless network generated by your routerAre you experiencing excessive slow navigation? With this tutorial, today I will show you a series of useful tips that you can take into account in order to speed up your connection Wireless.

They are, essentially, little tricks that can be implemented by anyone, even those who are not yet considered a great expert in new technologies.

How to speed up your wifi connection: options

Change router location

If you want to speed up your Wi-Fi connection, the first and most banal step I invite you to take is change router location at home, trying to place it a point more or less equidistant from all devices that generally connect to Internet (in the center of the house).

Whenever possible, try to keep the router away from obstacles such as additional technological devices, household appliances, mirrors and walls that, in fact, could prevent your wireless network from spreading uniformly and that may interfere with the latter, which affects the signal strength and, consequently, the speed of network .

To help you do this, if you have a iPhone, you can take advantage of the application Wi-Fi SweetSpots It acts as a radar to detect wireless signal strength in various areas of the home.

Once you have moved the router taking into account the previous indications, download the application from the App Store, start it and check the intensity of the network signal generated by it in the different rooms. In this way, you can determine the best location in a more or less precise way.

Change the channels used for Wi-Fi

Always bearing in mind the fact that interference is one of the main causes of slowdown in wireless networks, in order to speed up your Wi-Fi connection, I highly recommend change radio channel used for network transmission.

In fact, since Wi-Fi networks by their nature can interfere with each other (so those who live in or have houses around them can experience interference) and may be affected by other factors, such as usage For devices like the microwave and wireless oven, changing the channel used can help reduce interference by fully exploiting your wireless network coverage and browsing at the highest possible speed.

To carry out the operation in question, it is necessary to act from the control Panel of the modem. To access it, start the browser that you usually use to surf the net (eg. chrome ), enter the IP on the router in the address bar and hit Enter on the keyboard. Usually the modem address is 1 92.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 o 192.168.1.254.

If after doing this a page appears asking you to enter a combination of Username and password to access the admin panel try admin / admin or with admin / password, are the most common.

If the coordinates I just provided and / or the login details are not correct, find the correct coordinates by looking at the label trapped under the modem or on the side.

Once you are logged in to the device administration panel, go to the section dedicated to wireless network settings. Then find the menu to choose the Wifi channel and select a value other than the default.

If you want a suggestion, select the channel number 2, the channel number 6 or channel number 11, since they are the only ones that do not overlap with the others. However, you should try several to be able to identify the one with the least interference in your area.

After making the necessary changes in the administration panel of your modem, apply the changes by clicking the button apply o Save. In some cases, the router may restart after saving changes.

Unfortunately, I can't give you more precise directions on what to do, as the menu structure of the router's admin panel may vary by brand and model, and I don't know the exact device you own.

I also point out that to help you choose the Wi-Fi channel, you can also take advantage of special tools such as WifiInfoView on Windows Wireless diagnosis en Mac y Wifi analyzer en Android. These tools scan all nearby wireless networks showing the channels used, signal strength, and other useful details for the purpose in question.

Update the router firmware

Any deficiency in the speed of the wireless network may also result from an error or malfunction of the firmware currently in use.

Therefore, updating the latter to a newer version (if available) can be helpful in speeding up the Wi-Fi connection. But how can update the firmware the router? AND

To do this, first access the device control panel as seen in the previous step and go to the section of router upgrade.

Then press the button to check the presence of an update for the firmware in use and then, if available, where applicable i Installation. During this procedure, the router will automatically turn on and off.

You can also check the availability of more updated firmware by connecting to support and assistance from the Internet site of your modem manufacturer, download the corresponding file from there (if available) and upload it "manually" in the section of the administration panel of the router dedicated to updating the firmware, by clicking the button Surf or in open.

Use range extenders and power line adapters

If the problem is that your wireless network is not very fast because the Wi-Fi signal is not particularly extensive and the tips above have not had the desired effect (or at least not entirely), you can definitely deal with it by resorting to one or more range extender.

These are devices that, as you can guess by the name itself, allow you to take the signal from a wireless network and extend it to areas that are not normally reached by it.

They may look very similar to traditional modems / routers, or they may appear as small adapters to connect directly to the wall outlet. They have prices generally included between 20 and 50 euros and they are very simple to configure.

For more details and especially to find out which of the many range extenders on the market best suits your needs and your pockets, I highly recommend you check out my dedicated WiFi signal amplifier buying guide.

And if you live in a house with particularly thick walls or that is structured on several floors, you can choose some Powerline adapters which, unlike the devices mentioned above, exploit the technology of the waves carried to transmit data in the domestic electrical network. Simply put, they allow you to use your home electrical system (which is essential for it to be in good condition) to transmit the Internet signal.

Note that even in this case these are fairly simple devices to configure. Its cost is slightly higher than that of the range extender: between 25 and 60 euros, depending on the model chosen.

How to speed up your wifi connection: additional useful tips

To conclude and, above all, to complete the information, I want to show you some operations that you can perform in addition to what has already been seen in the previous lines to be able to speed up your Wi-Fi connection even more. Find everything below.

  • Restart the router - Considering that most users keep their router on virtually uninterruptedly, it can happen that the device gets stuck causing various kinds of problems, including excessive slowness while browsing. To cope with this, power cycle the router by pressing the corresponding button on the device, usually behind or to the side. Note that by doing this, the device configuration is not lost, as it is not a reboot but a simple "manual" reboot.

  • Change antenna - The antenna (or antennas) in most routers is of poor quality. The consequence is a short or not very extended signal and, consequently, a lower speed when browsing the network if the coverage of the device used is not optimal. To cope with this, therefore, I recommend replacing the antenna (or antennas) of your modem with a more efficient model, such as those sold on Amazon.

  • Install alternative firmware - The installation of an alternative firmware to the "standard" in the wireless router used can be another valid solution to speed up the Wi-Fi connection. In fact, third-party firmware offers a greater number of settings that allow you to increase the power and speed of the signal transmission. Among the main alternative firmware, I invite you to take a look at DD-WRT.

  • Update your PC drivers - If you have noticed an excessive slowness in the navigation under the wireless network only and exclusively when using the PC, obviously the problem is not the modem but the PC, or rather the drivers of your network card.

  • Do not install programs to speed up the connection. - I know, the temptation can be strong, very strong but… trust me: don't install software that promises to make the connection faster! Not only are they totally useless, but worse, in most cases they do more harm than good.

So far the tips on how to speed up your Wi-Fi connection.
