Um ... in fact you're right, it is not normal for people to visit the producers of all the software on your PC every day and it is also true that not all programs tell you that there is a new version of the program available for download.

The point is that keeping your software up-to-date is not only "beautiful" in that it allows you to take advantage of new features that might not otherwise be exploited, but it is also important from the point of view of informatic security. In fact, with the updates, software developers fix the flaws found in their products and prevent bad guys from attacking users' PCs by exploiting them.

I mean, I know it's boring, but you have to learn ads. update programs from your PC and to install the latest versions of these as soon as they are available. On the other hand, today there are many solutions that allow you to do it easily, both integrated into the OS such as those offered by third-party companies. If you want to know more, keep reading.

Update programs in Windows

You have a PC equipped with the operating system windows ? So know that you can count on different solutions that allow you to update the programs to the latest available version: now you can illustrate them in detail.

Microsoft Store

From Windows 8.x, the Microsoft operating system includes a Store that allows you to download, install and update the applications in a very simple way.

By default, Microsoft Store automatically checks for updates and installs them as soon as possible. However, the operation, as can be easily understood, refers only to the downloaded apps through the latter and not to the packets .exe o msi manually installed by the user.

To check if the automatic application update function has been activated on your PC, click the button comienzo (the flag icon located in the lower left corner of the screen), look for Microsoft Store in the menu that opens and click on the first search result: the Microsoft Store, for the note.

In the window that opens, click on the button (...) located in the upper right, select the item adjustments from the menu that appears and, if necessary, moves to en the lever relative to the option Update applications automatically.

Mission accomplished! Now Windows is configured to automatically download and install updates for applications downloaded from the Microsoft Store. If you want to "force" the search and install updates, click the button (...) located in the upper right, select the item Downloads and updates from the menu that opens and press the button Retrieve updates. Easier than that?

Windows Update

Some Microsoft software can be updated through Windows Update, the historical update service for the "made in Redmond" operating system.

To allow Windows Update to check for and install updates for Microsoft software, click the button. comienzo (the flag icon located in the lower left corner of the screen) and go up adjustments by clicking on the gear icon present next to the menu that opens.

In the new window displayed on the screen, click on the icon Update and security select Windows Update from the left sidebar, then go up Advanced and put the check mark next to the article Download updates for other Microsoft products during Windows update.

For programs to update correctly, Windows Update must be configured to automatically check for updates. Avira Software Updater

If you are looking for a way automatically update downloaded programs outside the Microsoft Storeyou can contact Avira Software updater - a software produced by the well-known information security company Avira that allows you to check the list of programs installed on your PC and download the latest versions of the latter. Supports more than 120 programs from all major manufacturers. In its basic version, which can be used for free without a time limit, it indicates the availability of updates but does not allow you to install them with one click (you must provide to download them "manually" from the websites of the different manufacturers). To get the one-click upgrade feature, you need to purchase the Pro version of the software for € 24.95.

To download the free version of Avira Software Updater on your PC, connect to the program's official website and click the button Free download. When the download is complete, start the file avira_it_swoe1_xx__ws.exe that you just downloaded to your PC and in the window that opens click first on the button Accept and install and then yes.

Therefore, the proposal to install the other Avira software (ex. Phantom VPN o System acceleration ) always clicking on continued, then press the button Avira open To open the Avira control center (which allows you to manage all the software produced by the company), follow the initial tutorial and wait for the installation of the Software Updater to complete automatically.

At this point, start Avira Software Updater by clicking the button open placed next to your name, select the icon overview from the left sidebar and wait for the list of programs installed on the PC to be verified.

In a few seconds, you will be at the top of the list with the software to be updated and, next to each one, two elements: the globe icon, to visit the manufacturer's website and download the update "manually", and the "Update" button, to download the update automatically (function available only in the Pro version of Avira Software Updater).

note: once installed Avira Software Updater is configured to run automatically when Windows starts. If you want to disable this behavior, right click on the taskbar Windows (the black bar at the bottom of the screen) and select the item Activity management from the menu that appears. In the window that opens, click on the entry to see all the details, then go to the card launch, select the icon Avira and press the button Deactivate located in the lower right.

Manual updates

Many programs, such as browsers or software antivirus, include within them a function of automatic update which allows you to have your latest version always installed on your PC: you just need to be careful when entering your settings, usually selecting the item adjustments o preferences of menu instruments or from the menu edit - and check the automatic update settings.

Other programs, however, like LibreOffice (the well-known free and open source productivity suite that can be used instead of Office), does not provide an automatic update system, but, through its menus, allows the user to "manually" check for updates. Keeping the LibreOffice example, to check for updates, start the program and select the item Search for updates of menu Help (above)

If a new version of the software is available, the user is advised and invited to visit the manufacturer's website to download it. The installation of the update, then, must be done manually using the classic procedure to install Windows programs, then starting the package .exe o msi downloaded to your PC and always clicking siguiente o siguiente.

Still other programs, like those of apple, are supplied with a special one update utility, which is responsible for verifying the availability of new versions of the software installed on the PC (in the case of Apple, iTunes and iCloud client ) and install them automatically. Update programs on macOS

Use a Mac ? No problem too MacOS, the operating system that powers Apple PCs, has built-in features and external software that allow you to keep your programs up to date. Read on to learn more about the topic.

Mac App Store

Mac App Store is the official Apple store, through which you can download, install and update many applications (as well as games) for macOS. It has a very convenient automatic update function that, if activated, allows you to always have the latest versions of the programs installed on your PC. As can be easily understood, the update refers only to applications downloaded via the Mac App Store and not those downloaded and installed "manually" via packages. dmg o PKG.

To check if your Mac is configured to automatically download updates for programs downloaded from MAS (should be by default), go to System preferences (L ' gear icon located in the dock bar) and click the icon Software update found in the window that opens.

At this point, make sure there is a check mark next to the item Keep Mac automatically updated. Then click on the button advanced And if it doesn't exist yet, put the check mark next to the available items, especially Install app updates from App Store. Mission accomplished: macOS will download updates for background applications and install them as soon as possible.

In macOS versions prior to 10.14 Mojave, we must follow a slightly different procedure: open System preferences and select App Store. MacUpdate desktop

Would you like it automatically update downloaded programs outside of Mac App Store ? For this purpose, you can trust MacUpdate desktop, the MacUpdate desktop client which, if you don't know it, is one of the main sites where Mac software is collected. Unfortunately, MacUpdate Desktop is not free software: creating the automatic update installation feature requires creation of an account and subscription of a subscription of $ 20 / month, but you can try all its functions at zero cost for 6 days.

To download the trial version of MacUpdate Desktop, connect to the official website of the program and click on the button Free download. Once the download is complete, open the package zip containing MacUpdate Desktop, drag the program icon to the folder applications of macOS and start the last one.

In the window that opens, click on the button open, Then in Skip introduction (to skip the initial tutorial) and select the item overview from the left sidebar. At this point, you agree to create your free MacUpdate account by clicking the button Register that is on the right, completing the form that is proposed to you (simply insert name, surname, direction of e-mail y password use to access the application) and click the button Register, located in the lower right.

Once the registration is complete, return to the tab overview and you should find the list of apps that need updates. Choose if you want to update them all at once by pressing the button Update all located at the top right, or if you update them individually, selecting their names and then clicking the button Update now appearing in the right sidebar.

Manual updates

As in Windows, even in MacOS, many programs offer an automatic update function, which must be activated in the preferences (generally going to the menu (Program name)> Preferences o (Program name)> About (program name) located at the top left and mark a special option in the window that opens).

Other software, such as LibreOffice, which do not offer a real automatic update function, allow the user to check the availability of updates (going, for example, to the menu Help> Check for updates ) and send it back to their official website, where they can download the latest version (to install "manually", via the package) dmg o PKG ).
