In addition to working, Windows XP It is an outdated product, it is exposed to many security risks and therefore must be modified. How? By making a good "formattone" of the PC and installing a newer version of the operating system from Microsoft, such as Windows 7 or Windows 10.
You ask me which version is more convenient to choose? I would advise you to go "directly" to Windows 10, which is the latest version of Microsoft's operating system, but in case of problems you can also consider the old Windows 7 (whose support will officially end on January 14, 2020). I don't recommend Windows 8 / 8.1, which is a kind of hybrid between Windows 7 and Windows 10 that many find too confusing.
The procedure you must follow to update XP it is long, but generally simple to complete. First, you need to make sure that your PC can «run»The latest versions of the Microsoft operating system, after which you must do a Backup complete your data and you must obtain a floppy disk of the Windows version that will be installed on the PC. For more details, keep reading, everything is explained below.
Verification of minimum requirements
Before doing anything else, make sure your PC is capable of running the latest versions of Windows.
Let's start with hardware requirements. To run Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 you need a PC with the following technical characteristics.
- 1 GHz processor or higher.
- 1 GB or 2 GB of RAM (depending on whether you want to install a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows).
- 16-20 GB of free space on the HDD.
- DirectX 9 compatible video card with WDDM 1.0 driver.
- Screen with a minimum resolution of 800 × 600 pixels.
As for me software requirements, you can find out which applications and drivers are compatible with the new versions of Windows using Windows Update Advisor.
Windows Upgrade Advisor is a small free application that checks the status of the system and allows you to find out which software and drivers, among which are currently in use, are compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8.x.
For Windows 10 there is no "official" Update Advisor yet, but it must be said that most software and compatible devices with Windows 8.x they are also compatible with Windows 10.
To download the Upgrade Advisor for Windows 7, connect to the Microsoft website and click the button first Download and then on that No thanks often. When the download is complete, start the program Windows7UpgradeAdvisorSetup.exe that you just downloaded to your PC, place the check mark next to the item I accept the terms of the license and click first install and then search y Start Verification to start system verification.
However, to download the Upgrade Advisor for Windows 8, link to this web page and click the button Download the free Windows 8 wizard. If the download does not start, click on this other link. Then the program starts Windows8-UpgradeAssistant.exe you just downloaded to your PC, wait for the system to scan and click on the item See compatibility details to see the list of software compatible (or not compatible) with Windows 8.
Once you get confirmation that you can update XP, get to work and proceed with a good backup all data on PC. To do this you can use the utility Guided transfer of files and settings what do you find in the menu Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools Windows XP or, better yet, one of the backup programs that you find in my tutorial on the subject.
Now you need to install the Windows version instead of XP. You have several options for doing this: you can connect to Amazon and purchase a copy of the operating system from there (which you could take home in floppy disk form or download code form), you can purchase Windows from Microsoft's website, or you can download one ISO image operating system from Internet.
To download the Windows 10 ISO image, connected to the Microsoft website, select the article Windows 10 from the drop-down menu Select edition and click on the button Confirm. Then select the article Italian From the menu to choose the language, click again Confirm and choose whether to save a version to 32 bit o 64 bit the operating system by pressing the corresponding button.
After the download is complete, you will need to Record the file Windows 10 ISO on a DVD use any suitable program for this purpose. If your PC doesn't have a CD / DVD player, you can burn ISO to USB using one of the applications that I recommended to you in my tutorial on the subject (note that Microsoft's media creation tool is compatible with Windows 7 only and later versions). No payment is required to download the ISO image, but obviously after installing Windows 10, you will need to activate the operating system with a valid product key.
To download the Windows 8 and Windows 7 ISO images (the latter requires input of a valid product key) follow the instructions in my tutorials on how to download Windows 8 and download Windows 7. Downloading Windows 8.x through Media Creation Tool requires a PC equipped with Windows 7 or later.
We are finally there! You have saved all your data, created a DVD or a flash drive USB with the Windows installation files and therefore now you just have to update XP.
To do this, connect the floppy disk or USB flash drive With the Windows installation files to the PC, reboot the system and boot from the drive that hosts Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10. If the drive does not work Windows XP is detected and starts normally, enter the BIOS Pc and change the boot order by setting the CD / DVD or USB drive as the primary option. You find it explained in more detail how to do it in my tutorial on how to enter the BIOS.
You must now choose the drive on which to install the operating system. Then click the icon of the disk where XP is installed (eg. Disk 0 Partition 1 ), then choose the item Drive options located in the lower right, click on the button format and start formatting the drive. When the operation is complete, click the buttons. siguiente y good and wait for the installation of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 to complete.
If you want, you can also install the new version of Windows without deleting the files on the hard drive (but still lose programs and settings). To do this, skip the formatting step of the drive and click the buttons directly siguiente y good. All files related to XP installation will be stored in a folder called windows.old en C:. Personally, I do not recommend this practice, but if necessary, it can be safely considered. After that, you can delete the Windows folder.old following the instructions in my tutorial dedicated to the subject.
