How to choose a portable printer
Portable printers are not all the same. In fact, there are many different types and to find the one that best suits your needs, you must learn to evaluate various technical characteristics - let's try to discover them in detail.
Printer for documents or photos
The first important distinction to be made is that between document printers y photo printers. Printers for document production use a system ink-jet Like most popular home printers, they can almost always print in color and ensure excellent performance even when it comes to printing graphic content.
Photo printers, on the other hand, use a defined system thermal sublimation where the polymers in solid state are treated with heat to go to the gaseous state and print the colors on the sheet. The interesting thing about this system is that it does not require cartridges. However, it requires a photo paper which can be particularly expensive. Also, it is good to specify that photo printers do not allow you to print documents larger than the classic 10 × 15 cm photo format, therefore, for example, they do not allow the creation of A4 documents. In contrast, inkjet printers can often print photos but with a lower quality than thermal sublimation printers.
Laser printers would also be suitable for document production, which, as you may already know, allows you to print many documents in series at high speed, but in the portable field they are practically nowhere to be found.
Standard printer or multifunction printer
Like traditional 'home' printers, mobile printers can also be divided into standard printers, which offer only the print function, and multifunction printers, which instead also includes a scanner and therefore can be used for photocopying and scanning.
As you can easily guess, MFPs are only the inkjet type (therefore they are primarily designed for text documents, even if they are often equipped with photo paper backing) and cost more than standard ones. It is up to you to decide whether it is worth considering based on your budget and printing needs.
Before buying a printer, carefully evaluate yours performanceThat is, the speed it uses to print documents and / or photos and the maximum resolution that the obtained prints can have.
la print speed is expressed in ppm (pages per minute) o ipm (images per minute) for documents and just in second for photos (for example, 40 seconds to get a 10 × 15 cm photo). The ppm and ipm values vary depending on whether you are printing in color or black and white (black and white prints are faster) and depending on whether the printer is powered by an electrical outlet or a battery (power from the battery may decrease printer performance a bit).
Print resolution is indicated in DPI (dots per inch) And as you can easily guess, the higher it is, the sharper the content printed on the sheet. However, it is good to note that there are almost always two values of PPE: a real one that the printer manages to guarantee with its internal mechanics and a "inflated" one that is achieved thanks to the systems to optimize and improve the image.
The same can be said of the scanners integrated in multifunction printers, which have two resolutions (always measured in DPI): one basic, real and the other increased through various technologies to improve the image.
Most portable printers support WiFi connection, so you can use it wirelessly with mobile phones, tablets and PCs with any Wi-Fi connection, but there are also some that work exclusively through a USB cable.
The most advanced models support technology Wi-Fi direct, thanks to which the printer can communicate wirelessly with other devices (such as mobile phones and tablets) without having a router or a supporting Wi-Fi network, and cloud printing that allow you to order prints from any workplace via Internet.
Supported paper sizes
Most document printers (inkjet printers) support sheets up to size A4, while photo printers, as already mentioned above, generally stop at the format 10x15cm. That said, if you have special needs and want to print on particular sheet formats, before opening your wallet make sure they are compatible with the printer you want to buy.
Always staying on the subject of sheets, I advise you to check for the presence of a component like ADF which in the most advanced portable printer models allows you to automatically load sheets for printing.
Power supply and autonomy
Portable printers are such that they can also operate via rechargeable batteries. Batteries, however, are not all the same. Before buying a portable printer, you would do well to evaluate the performance of its battery, that's how long it can guarantee, and understand whether it is supplied "standard" with the printer or whether it needs to be purchased separately.
Another important feature to check before buying a printer is its compatibility with the mobile phones, tablets and PCs you use. Buying a printer and then not being able to use it due to a lack of compatible apps or drivers would be a shame!
Other features that I recommend you consider when choosing a portable printer are the presence or absence of a display to adjust print settings on the fly; the availability of Slot for SD card y USB ports load documents to print without going through a PC, mobile phone or tablet; the cartridges and / or paper cost printer replacement; support to automatic duplex to print the sheets in both sides automatically and of course printer weight and dimensions, which can seriously affect your portability.
